Okay ... so they have 17 sheep.

So they borrow one from a neighbouring farm giving 18.

The oldest son gets half = 9
The middle son gets a third = 6
The youngest son gets a ninth = 2

Total 17 with one left over, so they can return that one to the neighbouring farm!
