'Sunbird'

so many promises she makes
and none for herself

responsibilities that she assumes from parents and peers
to conform and perform

trying so hard to please everybody
she has no energy left to please herself

and yet..
still she smiles
sunshine to drive the shadows from peoples lives
and still she laughs
a song that people can dance to

and when on rare occasions she spares herself a thought
people frown

they lead her back to her gilded cage
and invite aquaintances to watch her perform

we should all of us free this sunbird we have caged
and watch her fly free
in the clear blue skies
